01What a transformer does
A landscape lighting transformer steps 120-volt household power down to the 12 volts a low-voltage system runs on, then distributes it to the fixtures over buried cable. Light TN specifies the transformer to match the system, because everything downstream — brightness, consistency, fixture life — depends on it delivering clean, correctly-sized power.
02Size for headroom, not the edge
Light TN sizes a transformer to the total fixture load with headroom to spare, rather than wiring it to its limit. An overloaded transformer dims the run and shortens fixture life. Headroom also leaves room for a property to grow — adding a tree light or a new bed later without replacing the transformer. Sizing to the edge on day one is a common shortcut that shows up as problems later.
03Manage voltage drop with multi-tap outputs
Light TN manages voltage drop — the loss of voltage over a long cable run — using multi-tap transformers that offer several output voltages. Fixtures far from the transformer connect to a higher tap to compensate for the drop, so a light at the back of an acre runs at the same brightness as one near the house. Without this, distant fixtures read dim and inconsistent.

05Where the transformer is installed
Light TN mounts the transformer in a discreet, accessible location — typically near a power source and out of sight, in weather-rated housing. Placement is planned so the unit stays serviceable without being visible, and it's paired with efficient gear and LED fixtures. The U.S. Department of Energy notes that LED uses roughly 75% less energy than incandescent, so a properly sized low-voltage system runs for only a few dollars a month.
06Why this is worth doing right
The transformer is invisible, but it decides whether the visible system holds up.
