Light TN is a family-owned landscape lighting designer in Burns, Tennessee that treats control as the tool that makes layered lighting livable. The studio integrates outdoor lighting with the major control platforms, programmed and installed to licensed contractor CE-D: 76580 standards, across 500+ Middle Tennessee projects since 2020.

What is the average cost of a smart light system?

Light TN quotes smart control after the on-site design, based on the size of the system and the platform chosen. The consultation is free. Our published terms call for a 15% deposit on projects over $10,000 and no deposit on smaller projects. Compare what the proposal includes: the controller, compatible lighting equipment, any required network connection, integration and scene programming. A retail smart-bulb price does not describe that complete scope. Start with the outdoor areas you want to control and the systems already installed in your home.

What is the best smart outdoor lighting system?

The right system fits your lighting design, the controls already in your home and the way you use the property after dark. Light TN designs outdoor control with Lutron, Control4, Crestron and Savant integration in mind. Those names alone do not establish that every device or feature will work together. FX Luminaire’s Luxor documentation, for example, lists different supported functions for different integrations. Choose from a specification that identifies the compatible equipment, available scenes, zone control and network requirements. That is more useful than a universal brand ranking.

What are the downsides of smart lighting?

The main tradeoff is a more involved specification: equipment compatibility, network connections and the controls you will use every day need to be planned together. App control does not automatically provide independent dimming, color changes or reliable operation during every kind of outage. Lutron’s outdoor smart plug, for example, switches a compatible load on and off but does not dim it. Its hub adds app, scene and scheduling functions. Light TN plans scenes and zones around the lighting design, so the proposal should distinguish the functions included from those the equipment cannot provide.

How can I turn regular lights into smart lights?

Sometimes a compatible controller can add automation without replacing every fixture. The existing load, transformer and desired functions determine the approach. Lutron documents an outdoor smart plug that can switch compatible outdoor lighting and low-voltage lighting transformers; it provides on/off control rather than dimming. More detailed zoning or color control can require compatible fixtures and other equipment. Light TN assesses the home’s existing systems during the control plan. Ask which components can remain and whether the upgrade will switch the whole connected load or control separate areas independently.

Do I need a hub for smart lights?

It depends on the equipment and the functions you want. A wireless control is not necessarily a complete app-controlled system by itself. Lutron’s Caséta outdoor smart plug can work with a compatible Pico remote, while its app, scenes and scheduled events require the Lutron Smart Hub or Smart Hub PRO. Other landscape controllers use their own network modules and connection arrangements. Confirm those requirements in the specification before choosing equipment. Light TN matches the outdoor control platform to the home’s systems, including the hardware needed for the agreed control plan.

What app can I use to control my outdoor lights?

Use the app supported by the controller installed for your lighting system. Light TN plans outdoor lighting around platforms such as Lutron, Control4, Crestron and Savant, with scenes, zones and schedules defined during design. The specification should name the app, the equipment it controls and whether access works only on the property or also remotely. Lutron’s Caséta documentation, for example, requires its Smart Hub for app control of the outdoor plug. Do not assume that downloading an app adds compatibility or dimming to equipment that only supports switching.

Is there an app that can control all smart lights?

One app can manage a compatible integrated system, but no app should be assumed to control every smart light and every feature. Light TN designs outdoor lighting to join the home’s existing control platform where the equipment supports it. FX Luminaire’s integration matrix illustrates why that check matters: supported group, theme and color functions differ across its Control4, Savant, Lutron and Crestron integrations. Review the exact controller, software and supported functions before buying. If you also want lighting and outdoor audio in one scene, include both in that integration plan.

How to program a landscape light timer?

Program it using the instructions for the exact timer or controller, starting with the correct date, time and location settings. Then choose when the lighting should come on and when it should dim or turn off, if those functions are supported. Light TN uses astronomical scheduling to follow changing sunset times and programs scenes around arrival, entertaining and late-evening use. An ordinary clock timer and an astronomical controller do not use identical settings. Are there smart lights that can work without Wi-Fi?

Yes, some systems provide local control without Wi-Fi, but the available functions depend on their design. Lutron’s Caséta devices use its Clear Connect radio technology rather than Wi-Fi to communicate with compatible remotes and the hub. Its outdoor plug can be operated with a Pico remote. App access and automation have separate requirements, so “wireless” does not mean that every function is available without a network. Confirm how your specified system behaves when the internet fails, when the local network fails and when power is lost. These are different conditions.

Why are my smart lights showing offline?

An offline message means the app cannot communicate with part of the system; it does not by itself prove that a fixture has failed. Check which functions still work and whether the issue affects internet access, the local network or controller power. Lutron’s HomeWorks guidance distinguishes an internet-only outage from a complete network outage: local functions and app access behave differently, and communication between processors can be affected. Follow the support instructions for your installed platform and avoid resetting or replacing equipment before the cause is established. Caséta, HomeWorks and other platforms do not share one universal outage response.
